The phrase "pin-up" -- sometimes written as "pinup" or "pin up" has been used for decades. The term referred to sexy artwork including photos, paintings and prints that were typically "pinned-up" on the walls -- typically in barracks, locker rooms, boys bedrooms, etc. -- rather than properly and formally framed, hung and displayed as would be the custom for more socially-acceptable art and paintings. This very crude method of hanging sexy pinup art using thumb tacks or pins became the nickname for the entire genre rather than a term that would describe the art itself. Pin-ups art is not really relegated to just being a print or poster that is quickly hunts by thumbtacks. Pin-Up art can be photos, paintings, prints, fridge magnets, etc. and can even be in the form where it is painted by brush or airbrush directly on cars, airplanes, boats, RVs, buses, etc. During World War Two, it became popular to decorate combat war aircraft with painted on sexy pin-up girl art on the nose of the aircraft and dovetailing the specific artwork into the name of the aircraft.
